This being said, this version of the short hop is a rising short hop opposed to a falling short hop which can be performed by doing a traditional short hop. In certain cases one is objectively better than the other.
I felt this wasn't talked about as much - but Nintendo did actually add a "SHORT HOP" macro to the game.
Press both jump buttons at the same time (X & Y) and you'll short hop.

HOLY MOLY, pro controller is busted now, if you only use right bumpers for shield and grab, you can map both left buttons to jump, basically giving you a short hop button

As an old man (35) who can't physically get his fingers to do what they need to do to short hop consistently, bless them.
