note that this study didn't ask trans teens if they had undergone surgery or hormone treatment; it's likely many had not.
"Some experts believe rising awareness of transgender issues has led increasing numbers of...teens to...experiment with gender identification" Teen experimentation is only a step away from age 18+ ability to access hormones easily now under affirmative-care and informed consent.
Kids are being given no other way of understanding their non-conformity other than that it meaning they are 'trans.' Interesting how adults are teaching this to kids at the same time as framing it as a 'youth' movement.
