*1 of CN's first female reporters. There's a term "Missouri Mafia" to describe the alumni of the journalism school in the US who were active. The same could also be applied to this wave of returnees to China. Jao was a Tsinghua student when he went abroad to Missouri

蕭公權 a historian recalled fondly his time w/ Jao & a dozen or so CN students at Columbia in a book on famous scholars: they both happened to be interested in the violin & took lessons together at Stephens College. Xiao was inspired by Mischa Elman's performancespic.twitter.com/ailKHaNGkN

After
@thisboyuan paid 66 yuan for a digital copy of a 1937 student record, we finally found the answer to 1 of our big ques: where was Jao from? Turns out he's from Xingning in Guangdong, about 350kms away from Guangzhoupic.twitter.com/MpGetJm7eS

The next time he popped up was in 1936, when he published an article in the Quarterly Review of Chinese Railways. He was working at the Railway dept in Nanjing & the 1937 student record showed he was a secretary for the dep. We're not sure what Jao got up to btw 1926 & thenpic.twitter.com/9cAS5pODy3

Carrying on, as the Japanese army advanced on China, the Nationalists moved capital to Chongqing in 1937. The Railway dep was closed as many of China's key links came under Japanese control. Jao appeared as the general manager for Hankow Independent Herald 自由西报 in 1938pic.twitter.com/DzVmZOY4pI

The paper was started in Hankow, now Wuhan, in 1923 by Peter Jowe, a Hankow native & Bruno Schwartz from Brooklyn. The Nationalistsacquired it in 1932 for propaganda. Unfortunately the paper shut down 1946 due to lack of funding. Jao didn't stay for v long http://www.baike.com/wiki/%E8%87%AA%E7%94%B1%E8%A5%BF%E6%8A%A5 …

As
@thisboyuan deduced, Jao wld have met the man that led to his role at AP at Yenching: John Leighton Stuart. The CN-born American dedicated himself to improving education in CN & was appointed the US ambassador to CN in 1946https://www.nytimes.com/2008/11/20/world/asia/20china.html …Prikaži ovu nit -
Btw 1946 - 49, Jao started working at AP, on recommendation from Stuart, before meeting his end in 1951. The rest of the story found herehttps://apnews.com/74a21cf8d90267096cc05d775d016083?fbclid=IwAR1hjGFrJL0uUdYvLISDVu1PaAlIpXEy99NSIO4-6mD6y2QeWfH1bG4TvWo …

An academic discussion in 2017 about CCP internal documents shed light on how diff Jao's fate cld have been. Jao & 张国兴 Zhang Guoxing were both CN reporters working for American news wires in 1949 when CCP took control of CN. Zhang worked for UPI http://difangwenge.org/read.php?tid=14827&displayMode=1 …

CCP did not recognise Jao & Zhang's press creds issued by the Nationalists & did not allow them to send telegraphs. The Nationalists had not liked Zhang's work, while he was popular with the CCP. He decided to leave for HK & arrived there in Dec 1949 after an easy passage

Academics speculated Zhang (Chang Kuo-sin in canto) may have been targeted for United Front work. Zhang cont'd to have an illustrious career in HK & taught journalism at Baptist U for over 20 yrs before retiring. He passed away in the US in 2006 at 90 http://www.comm.hkbu.edu.hk/chang/f_life.htm …
