Hello hello
#IWD2023 is nearly here, and so are companies' cut-and-paste platitudes. And once again we're bringing you the data to see whose support for #InternationalWomensDay is genuine, and who's still got work to do.
Here's a reminder of how it works

Nowadays people outside our field are sometimes surprised to see hundreds or thousands of authors on our papers, but it really takes the work of hundreds/thousands of people to design, build, run particle physics experiments and analyse their data!

They enabled bubble chamber experiments analyses for almost 30 years (including the Nobel prize winning discovery of NC interactions). Yet, they were often left out of author lists and acknowledgements!

Scanners manually looked at thousands of frames of bubble chamber data, looking for signatures of interesting particles! When they found some, they would measure them and catalogue them in databases!

On my way to Norwich for the #NineLessons with the ! For once I am not talking about neutrinos though😮
As a few days ago was international day of women and girls in science, I decided to talk about the #scanners of #bubbleChamber experiments!

Sigh. I have said it too many times - including to @commonsSTC: you do not fix a leaky pipeline by just pouring more and more water in the inlet whilst smiling optimistically.

.@AdvanceHE said the figures hint at good progress in “improving the pipeline” of female researchers, and will hopefully lead to better representation among professors, reports @paddywjack

it’s interesting to see how many folks in academia - particularly those from underrepresented and marginalised groups - have depended on Twitter for the sort of community and support that they did not receive from their own institutions or local colleagues
