i feel like federal regulation (or lack thereof) isn't really the issue in this case (afaik california's power is federally regulated, and they have yearly rolling blackouts / brownouts in the summertime thanks to extreme weather).

@ERCOT_ISO and their lack of preperation/mismanagement certainly factor in. ERCOT was established specifically to avoid fedral influence, and regulation is a part of that. I don't think you are wrong to comment on this but I think your perspective is off. Texas doesn't get weather like this normally and you don't build infrastructure for things that aren't commonplace or within a reasonable tolerance of norms. Imo it's a waste of $
