This means that Affliction currently can go completely without using a direct damage spell in the rotation. This would be VERY BAD if a cool trinket in Shadowlands only procs on direct stuff, so it's good to find out now! But why was this only a problem in m+? (5/n)

The answer to *that* is that in raid, people are running Haunt. And Haunt *does* deal direct damage, every 15s. And Psyche Shredder just happens to have a 10s ICD. So it's not getting full value, but it's not easily noticeable, either. Now I have to check the sims (6/n)

Malefic Rapture wasn't being picked up as indirect damage automatically, so that required hardcoding but was an easy fix. But during testing of this, I accidentally found that DoTs like Agony were proccing Shredder in the sim, but only on application. The plot thickens... (7/n)

Now there are definitely things in game that proc on successful cast of a harmful spell. By default Shredder was coded as one of them in the sim. But going back to the combat log for Malefic Rapture confirmed that this wasn't the case for DoTs. (8/n)

So now instead of just fixing one spec ability, I have to go and adjust the proc flag for the trinket and affect everyone potentially. (Side note: it'd be great if this flag was in the spell data, but alas) It's hard to say offhand if any other spec is really affected. (9/n)

And now the BONUS ROUND: Because of how our code is structured, Shredder was only rolling for success once per event. Changing the flag meant it would roll for every impact, so I was worried that sims were inaccurate either before or after. (10/n)

So I log into my Mage, and start spamming Arcane Explosion. And it hits the same dummy in a group of three... every time. More than 10 in a row. Positioning and targeting have no effect. Now I'm even more bamboozled. (11/n)

Examining the combat log, it seems like this proc is always picking the highest GUID out of all the ones hit. I put myself out of range of the original dummy and it went to the next highest. Moving from Boralus to Ironforge showed the same behavior. (12/n)

So good news: I don't have to worry about multiple targets being hit with the proc! Bad news: It's still technically inaccurate, but very close in the sim. And this rabbit hole is too uncertain to model, so I have to leave it be. (13/n)

And that, dear reader, is how I spent 3 hours testing trinket behavior when all I wanted to do was sit down and update one line of code for Malefic Rapture. ...and I'll probably have to do it again for something in Shadowlands. fin (14/14)
