Most black actresses come to a new set w/ their hair done (me) or bring their wigs & clip-ins w/them. It’s either that or take a chance that you will look crazy on screen. Many of us also bring our own foundation. One too many times seeing no shade that matches you will learn ya!https://twitter.com/malcolmbarrett/status/1104802956296089600 …

Another reason
@HamiltonMusical important? I hadn't thought thru these aspects. Yeah, one of the ideas behind 'parite' in France, to mandate 50% women in all govt institutions (tho it not trans/queer friendly) was to ensure that stuff like this gets noticed, addressed.

Yes! People like to pretend I’m lying when I say that I’ve experienced hostility around lighting me (more comfortable than the truth, I guess). The fact that they didn’t learn how to light for varying skin tones at once was somehow my fault.

No excuse for that. I’m ashamed as a theater fan. There’s been many many popular plays with predominant black casts since Shuffle Along plus colorblind casting for a looong time. There should be whole textbook chapters devoted to proper makeup and lighting of darker skin by now

It really depends on their education. The info is out there, but some technicians ignore/were never taught, then feel like it’s the actors of color who are to blame for their shortcomings.

I’m in theatre as well and I’ve had to do my own makeup majority of the time but lighting throws it off because most techs don’t know how to light a dark girl!pic.twitter.com/K7uOcpMyGZ

It’s called professional development! If you don’t know something, take a class/workshop/conference. It’s unacceptable and starts with the cosmetology schools that don’t require competency in ethnic hair as a graduation requirement!

Preach.... the B.S./white wives tales (??) I've heard from I'll equipped/unskilled make-up artists: black women only use cream blush...
...is that right?
