We were stunned—but she seemed more resigned than surprised. She told us to make sure we had no more than $20 in quarters. Also, no earrings, she reminded us—and no necklaces other than a cross. (Wedding bands are okay.) 6/

This is one reason why people aren’t effectively rehabilitated...they are so dehumanized when they leave prison they have no idea they deserve more then this...basic humanity should dictate the treatment prisoners get...look at Europe many countries maintain dignity=low returns
-
The thing is our prison system doesn't *want* low returns. An empty prison sounds like a good thing to normal ppl but for those running them it = no money in their pocket.

The pleasure the guards get at inflicting petty indignities and disappointments is visible.

My father in law was a teacher in a prison and did outreach to inmates for most of his life after he retired. He said several times that there was not a lot of difference between the screws and the inmates except a few lucky breaks.

I visited someone in prison in 1995/94 & the experience was demoralizing. I had to use a phone but couldn't really see him through the wire mesh. There was no glass like on tv. The cruelty is the point. They cut people off from society for yrs & then release them on the streets.

Someone somewhere is making a lot of money out of this being the status quo
-
Not someone somewhere. Specific people, who have names, addresses, and jobs. We know who they are.

This is all so true. Rules about visitation, abt how often you can buy clothes or snacks or sanitary materials, ridiculous rules about getting any medicine when an inmate is sick, it goes on and on. Ever changing, completely nonsensical rules.
-
And the only thing you can count on is that all these rules are often made to make families pay more money to the private prisons- through unbelievable mark ups for basic food and clothes items, special calling services, and other BS. It’s infuriating.

Don't think for 1 minute I'm excusing criminals, but they need to be treated humanely. 80% of inmates will be released at some point & keeping families together benefits their children & them as well. Likely they do better when released if they have a support system.
