Reason fares have to keep rising is a) unending rail strikes designed to cripple the rail companies profits, time tables, reliability b) >£100k+ per year salary, when the job is not exactly skilled or requiring a brain like airline pilots who r paid £65k c) unnecessary guards

1/2 Where to start... (a) Not aware of any industrial action on
@EMTrains. (b) Pretty sure drivers - who do a skilled, responsible, safety-critical job - don’t earn £100k but if TOCs believe staff shortages are leading to excessive wage rises they could train more drivers...

What has happened ed to the cost of rail fares in Venezuela in the equivalent time period?
-
I’ve no idea. Not sure any of my constituents would be especially concerned about fares in South America or think that was a useful comparison.
-
Well I used to be one of your constituents, and although granted it’s extreme, I do think it serves as a useful warning as to what your party leader’s ideology can lead to. Renationalising railways is another unaffordable flying pig of a policy.

Well done Lilian. Like myself, are you getting fed up of national campaign days on rail three times a year? Especially when bus journey numbers have been falling for longer and bus fares have risen higher than rail, affecting the poorest who are more likely to use buses?
-
I don’t disagree about the need to highlight what’s happening to bus fares & bus services. Today the Government announced that a new Railcard will offer 50% discounted travel for 16 & 17 year olds by September but said nothing about young bus passengers!
-
That is an interesting decision given that annual DfT statistics published 2017 showed under 17s took fewer rail trips than other age groups (except the over 70s) but took more bus trips than other age groups.

Wouldn't expect anything else from

Well done
@LilianGreenwood just remind “failing” Grayling next time you see him not to blame the front line staff for the fare increases, maybe suggest he has a look at his own ever increasing board of executives and directors on £300k + wages who seem to get 10% rise every year! Thanks. How will Treasury balance the books if rail fares do not rise? Labour raised fares even faster.

Then you’ll need to increase taxation to replace the money used from fares to fund upgrades, modernisation, new rolling stock, staff, buildings ... the list goes on.
