Capitalism profits from exploiting people's bodies. The exploitation is not a side show; it's the main feature.

Call your senators. No matter who they are, no matter what they’ve said, no matter if you just called them last week. Call your senators.

50 years ago, Congress set in motion one of the most cataclysmic changes in the world of philanthropy: the donor-advised fund. My thoughts on how that happened and what it means for private v. public power.

Woke up to a New York Times op-ed about one group being intellectually superior to others and citing a paper co-authored by a white supremacist as evidence. The 2020s will be the most difficult decade in modern history. I hope we can face it with laughter and love.

"the executive order will not act to protect Jews — and it doesn’t aim to. On the contrary, its very promotion reinforces the most dangerous and hateful images of both modern and pre-modern anti-Semitism..."

Me on why, like it or not, Lauder's $25M pledge to fight antisemitism reveals the politics of Jewish philanthropy:

. + are world-class journalists but the needs to change this headline. Trump isn't targeting anti-Semitism. He's using a bogus definition of anti-Semitism to target critics of Israel

Major Jewish Trump supporter gives $25M to solve antisemitism, notes he will monitor university professors and characterizes Trump as not having "an anti-Semitic bone in his body." Don't tell me philanthropy--or antisemitism--isn't political.

Castigating "the media" for not covering antisemitism; throwing shade on Bernie by calling Sarsour his surrogate; categorically equating anti-Zionism with antisemitism all seems like a textbook case of being coopted by the logic of the oppressor. No thanks, Bari Weiss.

This was brutal. I loved every second of it.

I haven't gotten so little done since the Kavanaugh hearings. And Nunes, you can take your Watergate nighttime fantasies and put them in the same dark place where you seem to have hidden your ability to feel shame.

An attack against against an ideology is not the same as an identitarian attack, and it can't be solved through call-out culture or State Department guidelines or legislative grandstanding.

But if we take seriously the fact that it is an ideology (akin to liberalism or nationalism or socialism), with a complicated history, then we need to discuss content--what it should be, what it is.

If being a Zionist is just an identity, then we can parade it like an outfit, with little regard to what's inside of it--as the student does in the op-ed.

Tepid-take (not fast enough to dish it hot) on the student's NYT op-ed: he's confusing ideology for identity. And he's not alone. We've become so fixated on proclaiming whether or not we are Zionists (h/t J institutions), that we have basically stopped talking about ideology.

This piece is important on two fronts: 1) Yes, it's antisemitic to exclude Jewish students from groups unless they denounce Israel. 2) Mainstream Jewish community has contributed to problem by insisting that supporting Israel=supporting occupation.(1/3)

Zuck a few days ago; Summers now. Good to get these justifications of concentrated wealth via philanthropy out into open. Bc if elite philanthropy is presented so clearly as alt to progressive taxation, then public has much more of stake in determining proper scope of giving.
