but this takes a good deal of work. Often, we eschew the work and just identify with our social circle, our work, or political and religious causes. This is analogous to the “leaving home” phase of life, and a big reason why those in college act as they do.

At some point in this phase, the individual has to determine who they are and commit to an identity, because the ease of changing decreases throughout the 20s. Part of this phase involves the acceptance of the responsibilities of life, and the maturing into a complete adult.

From there we move into the stage of parenthood, which involves another large shift in priority from that of the self to that of the child. Our generation seems to be fairly bad at this because of the naive attitude retained from stages two and three not being transcended.

I’d also theorize that the highest stage of development would be something like the grandparent- a person who is left to guide the future generations with the wisdom they’ve accrued. Interestingly enough, while there is an age-based correlation, you do not necessarily have to be

60 years old to advance as a person (although that is generally how it goes because situations present obligations.) The sooner you accept the responsibilities that life demands, the sooner you start planning for your lineage, and the sooner you can elevate your perspective

beyond that of your individual life, the better able you will be to operate properly in the world. We have to do this the hard way because we don’t generally have extended families and enduring cultural transmissions nowadays. Take up the burden of time.
