Morning all. With the SpaceX Crew Dragon launch delayed to Saturday at least, now is a good moment for media organisations to update their style guides to use "human" or "crewed", and not "manned" spaceflight. #teamcrewed.pic.twitter.com/ci6OrjxdSB

Whenever I give an interview on the subject (and there was a lot yesterday), I always try to remind the producers of this before we go live and get scripts changed. I don't always get the chance, and they don't always listen, but every little helps.

I was pleased to note that of all the slots I did yesterday, it was only an issue on a few - which is (believe it or not) and improvement, but there is still work to do.

To those drumming up rage in the replies and shouting about how this is irrelevant, not important, and just pointless it is, I suspect you won't read this. But why is this important? Here's one reason why:https://twitter.com/Astro_Flow/status/1031700996169388040 …

I remember giving a talk and only the boys raised their hands and wanted to be Astronauts. I asked the girls why and they said that I said it was the Manned Space Program. That day my language changed and it became the Human Space Program. Language and #RepresentationMatters TY🚀

As this is rumbling on, here's a few more additions. 1) Thank you to whoever did the original meme. I tried to find the source before, now I would really like to so I can give due credit. 2) Thank you to all who are fighting the good fight.

        3) It was an observation towards the media. Everyone who is getting cross and raging about this, who isn't in a position of having lots of readers... I'm not demanding that you change your language.

4a) Manned doesn't offend me and I understand it means the same thing. That's not the point. I have made my career choices and I'm doing OK in it.

4b) This is about unconcious bias in society, the media being a position to be more inclusive and set an example and helping young people to see that their life choices aren't constrainted by labels that society puts on them.

I assume that by crew you mean everybody involved. Not just those on board the actual craft. Because some one is bound to say that it was “manned” because the onboard crew were both men.

No it's crewed. Spacecraft are not exclusively crewed by men, they can be crewed by humans of all genders.

This always drives me nuts. Women at work, from HR no less, said manned when they could've used staffed the other day!
