    1850 the Commons rejected a motion put forward by the protectionist MP Grantley Berkeley to consider reinstating the corn laws, which had been repealed in 1846. Disraeli spoke & voted in support of the motion.

    Rockingham offered the great William Pitt the Younger the post of Vice Treasurer of Ireland which the future PM turned down. Pitt called himself as an Independent Whig although the Tories claimed him!

    1730: Birth of Charles Watson Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, Whig statesman and Prime Minister. Rockingham was arguably the first leader of a political party, when in 1762 a group of young Whigs formed a club in opposition to the Earl of Bute.

    1815: Birth of Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville, Whig MP for Morpeth and then Lichfield. Granville was a fixture in every Whig and Liberal government from the 1840s to the 1880s, most known for his tenures as Foreign Secretary.

    1918: The Maurice Debate takes place in the House of Commons, following allegations that the War Cabinet had deliberately held soldiers back from the Western Front and lied to Parliament about it. Asquith took up the allegations against David Lloyd George.

    1986: Elizabeth Shields wins the Ryedale by-election for the Liberal-SDP Alliance with 50.3% of the vote. Shields' time as an MP was a short one as the Conservatives recaptured the seat in the general election the following year.

    1935: Birth of Richard Livsey, Baron Livsey of Talgarth, respected Welsh agriculturist who famously won the Brecon and Radnor by-election for the Liberal Party in 1985 by just 559 votes but went on to hold the seat until 1992, then from 1997 to 2001.

    1878: Alarmed at the prospect of war with Russia John Bright addresses an anti-war rally of 1,500 people to speak against Britain's potential involvement in the Balkans. The danger of war was ultimatelyy averted the following July with the Treaty of Berlin.
