Yes. Also, many still view Chinese suffering as somehow different and unrelated to them. Meanwhile, my friends in China keep sending me masks that are unavailable here and I am giving to hospitals.

Li, my friends there are appalled that I’d go shopping without a mask and when I tell them doctors and nurses barely have them... imagine. That kind of stuff is what makes me feel doomed.

Visceral reminder that China is not the "other" and that we should all pay attention to what is happening around the world. Images of people scrambling to get tested, overloaded hospitals, and overworked medical staff bring me back in the worst way possible.
