It’s heartbreaking to see the tragedies in Wuhan replays again&again in so many places around the world. @nytimes has been running stories about Wuhan&China on the front page since Jan. It seems humans have the tendency to believe the same tragedies wouldn’t happen to ourselves..

Yes. Also, many still view Chinese suffering as somehow different and unrelated to them. Meanwhile, my friends in China keep sending me masks that are unavailable here and I am giving to hospitals.

Li, my friends there are appalled that I’d go shopping without a mask and when I tell them doctors and nurses barely have them... imagine. That kind of stuff is what makes me feel doomed.

And at the cost of best journalists being kicked out of China. If China has no credit, why not learning from South Korea?

Visceral reminder that China is not the "other" and that we should all pay attention to what is happening around the world. Images of people scrambling to get tested, overloaded hospitals, and overworked medical staff bring me back in the worst way possible.

Its the fact everyone is so "suprised!" like no one saw it coming -- that is the most hideous thing about it in the West.
