Many Chinese are commemorating Deng Xiaoping, who died on this day 23 years ago. They say that they benefited from his reform and opening policies and are worried where the country is going. Seems many people did soul searching while being stuck home for the epidemic.

This shows how selective people's memories can be! He's the one who put the current system in place--the Four Cardinal Principles 四项基本原则 in 1979--and in 1989 very firmly set the limits...

Both sides are fascinating—so much effort was put into building up the hagiography of Deng, despite the fact that two of his most important legacies alongside “reform & opening” are 基本原则 & 六四. But his meaning—in propaganda & popular memory—keeps changing as time goes on...

Completely agree with your sentiments and also I hope and wish that top notches of #CCPChina also do soul-searching as a tribute to the great leader Deng Xiaoping and the honour of great nation China.

The fact was that there had never been any grand plan dreamed up by Deng; he had to reform and open up bcos the economy after 10yrs of cultural revolution was close to collapse. Hence his famous motto “cross the river by feeling for the stones”.

People who are nostalgic about the past era are delusional bcos factional infighting doesn’t exist as all communist party members want the same thing- being in power forever. Of course there are power struggles for the purpose of maximising the benefits for themselves.
