While the Party makes sure that the Chinese nationalism is imbued with public memories of the century of humiliation by the western imperialism and invasion, many Chinese also witnessed how China's reform and economic growth came hand in hand with opening up to the outside world.
For them, China has changed tremendously in many ways. At the same time, it hasn't changed or changed for the worse in the past few years in terms of individual liberty and political liberalization.
