I thought the world was overpopulated and we didn’t want an ever-expanding world population? And yet this always presented as a crisis rather than an opportunity.

I agree. It’s just that any country that has an population decrease is always described as having a demographic crisis. You read the same things about European countries, with the twist that they’re supposed to have ever-expanding immigration to compensate.
