Of course not. There are a lot of admirers of the independent judiciary system in this group. It’s about sending the right message: they’re not targeted as a group. Now they very much feel being targeted for being who they are and what they do.https://twitter.com/dfooter/status/1072287928099909632 …

So we should give up an independent judiciary to assuage Chinese tech leaders? For what, given that in the six years, as China techies have seemingly become ever more powerful, Chinese governance has become evermore centralized and authoritarian?

The job of the US judicial system is not to assuage people's feelings, but to prosecute criminals. Nobody quoted defends Ms. Meng as innocent, rather she is "a member of a tech elite that has long thought of itself as too valuable to be threatened". Pretty self-serving.. 1/2

Right. Consider all the fraud related to the US debt bubble in 2008. We had GS bankers do all but admit to it sneeringly before Senate panel. Not one big fish was prosecuted whereas 1000 guys were in S&L crisis. There is a ton of political discretion applied all the time

"Now they very much feel being targeted for being who they are and what they do." It's the failure of the U.S.-China relationship that the U.S. politician and scholars naively believe that China will be democratical on the political sys after they gain more freedom in economics.

The distorted nationalism and victim view are rooted in most of Chinese's bones and soul. It's not a political view or worldview, it's part of their culture that was shaped by #communist controlled education. It does not matter if these elites want indp judiciary system or not.

Er, what is "what they do" in this context? Because what Meng is accused of doing is misleading banks about Huawei's connections to a company suspected of violating sanctions on exports to Iran.

What would you recommend the US govt do to send that message? Your piece focuses overwhelmingly on Meng's case as reason for distrust/disappointment, but as you agree here the US admin shouldn't interfere with that. What concrete suggestions would you make instead?

I feel like if they don’t engage in bank fraud they’ll be fine. Unlike Michael Kovrig.

Maybe they should be targeted as a group. A group that has aided and abetted the rise of a totalitarian state and continues to service it for personal gains at the sacrifice of the rest of the world.
