Silicon Valley once saw China as a copycat. China now has some of the world’s biggest internet companies. It has more unicorns than the U.S. A group of Silicon Valley executives went to China on a learning trip and discovered a parallel tech universe.https://nyti.ms/2D4FSYE

About China's tech scene being "homogeneous": The US is already a tech superpower. That's why everyone wants to go there. And that's why it is "diverse". The media will compare China to the US (and not developing nations e.g. India) because that's an easy way to downplay China.

Very good article! I also notice the lack of diversity in many Chinese companies. Has anyone ever met a Chinese who finds this as a disadvantage? Mostly I think Chinese cos are reluctant to hire foreigners. Thinking is Chinese fit in easier and maybe cheaper?

The lack of diversity transcends race and extends unabated into gender too. Women are typically employed as servants in Chinese tech companies. Women in tech in China do exist (obviously), but they're rarely integrated into a corporation's culture and are usually DIY makers.

So they hadn't heard about the 996 culture until they actually visited China? Seems either exaggerated or a downright lie.
