Probably Tolkein. Think about the impact he had across all English fantasy. Also served as an eye-opener. Also, did Jin Yong massively open eyes to the outside? Some risqué stuff but much of it inward looking and drawing from tradition?
Discussed with friends about who would be the equivalent of Jin Yong in the West. J.K. Rowling, George R.R. Martin & Tolkien? But for people who read him in 1980s and 1990s, Jin Yong meant a lot more because we had limited access to the outside world. Don’t hate me for saying this but I think he aggravated a lot of existing stereotypes, the bad ones that should have been purged or at least reconsidered. His contribution to fantasy is unparalleled but he was not socially progressive by any means.
