Probably cash is the only way foreigners can pay, as visa and mastercard are not accepted in the majority of malls. Also, it's almost impossible to add a visa card to wechat and alipay...

Opening a bank account in China and linking it to your wechat account is easy. Doesn't mean I want the Chinese government to know what brand of beer and condoms I buy...

This information misleads many people. Alipay and WeChat payment already support the offline payment function. When the network environment is not good, you can tell the user that the payment has been successful by SMS.

Suddenly, being a clueless laowai doesn't sound so bad... Although I have a bank account in China, I refuse to link it to my WeChat. Cash or UnionPay.

I was at a Fresh Hema 盒马鲜生 store in Chengdu a couple of weeks ago, and was about to pay cash when their system went down. Dozens of people waited there for long time, unable to pay by any means. I finally gave up.

They will regret this when the government/banks (same thing) charge their customers negative interest rates and limit withdrawals in any crisis. This is nothing short of a matter of freedom, one can understand why that isn't of interest in Shenzhen but it better be in the US!
