Such a moving essay. Despite calling itself a socialist country, China has among the world’s biggest gap in income, access to education and healthcare. Hundreds of millions of Chinese face similarly helpless situations as the author’s family.https://nyti.ms/2BE9qxq

Despite claim to Socialism with Chinese characteristics since 1988 China has been steadily reverting to its pre-Liberation days of good old South American style capitalism, super rich and super poor. Government needs absolute control to prevent a bloody revolution.

Indeed- that GINI coefficient. Ouch. Plus most of the calculation for that relies on data provided by the CCP Party-State.....

This the old urban-rural gap. When I went to China it was 80% rural and 20% urban. Now it is 55% urban and 45% rural. A massive drop in poverty.

‘Absolute’ & ‘Relative’ poverty/inequality. The country has reduced absolute poverty massively- and in doing so has become one of the most unequal societies on the planet: without any real form of safety net. Whether your hukou is urban or rural. It’s not something to be lauded!

Her follow-up essay about choosing between family and career is also very genuine. P.S., that line all kids from the school she taught came from privileged families isn’t exactly true.

Wonderful heartfelt writing. My mother in law has lung cancer and we (wife) have struggled with similar feelings. The desire of the Chinese ‘healthcare’ system to jump straight to hugely expensive procedures; or offer no treatment at all. A parent who doesnt want to be ‘a burden’

        无法理解,如果病情严重就看急诊,医院会按情况紧急与否收入病人;如果只是门诊,那当然要预约啦,国外医院难道就不用预约了吗?
