Excellent point! When the Corps first heard about Grizzly Bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) they thought that the natives were telling tall tales, little did they know that the 7 feet tall, 800 pound, 35 mph running bears were very real.

A4 Funny, when at the L&C NHP last year, I remember seeing the trail to the ocean (six miles round trip, if memory serves) and feeling almost obligated to do it. I mean, it was such a minuscule portion of their trip...but time was tight, so...

A4. From the standpoint of Native Americans, I can only guess there was curiosity, and perhaps a little fear of something different coming their way. I wonder how Native Americans today think about the story.
