Why are we playing chess rather than checkers? Well, not all social arrangements are available to us. There's a limit to how malleable we are. There are limits to what sorts of social norms are sustainable.

Imagine giving billions of dollars to each individual barber. Do you think this norm/society would last long? People would rush to be barbers. People would stop doing lots of wealth creating jobs. We'd run out of money to pay the barbers etc.
