I may be projecting because I had Boomer parents who raised Late Gen X/Early Millennial kids and I was definitely allowed to be by myself for short periods at that age in the 90s.

Like it wasn't an every day thing. We went to after school care and stuff. But it definitely was allowed for quick errands. And I was taking the city bus from my school to ballet class by age 9.

Once, when she was five, we left my dad in charge of watching her and her baby sister and as soon as we all left the house, he went to sleep. She immediately called my mother at work and said "Jedo just went to sleep and I don't think I should be left in charge of Hazel alone"
