Tanisha Anderson. Rekia Boyd. Miriam Carey. Michelle Cusseaux. Shelly Frey. Eleanor Bumpurs, Tyisha Miller, LaTanya Haggerty, Margaret Mitchell, and Tarika Wilson. These are the names you may not know, but you should, all are Black Women, all were killed by law enforcement.

While Black Trans & Cis Women, Gender non-confoming and NB Black folks have been on the front lines of this latest fight against white supremacy we have also watched the erasure of the police violence we have faced as a community. #SayHerName

In 2015 the @AAPolicyForum launched #SayHerName which included a detailed report about police violence against Black Women and a nationwide day of action led by organizations like @byp100 (ht @sandylocks) Read the report here: https://aapf.org/shnreport 

That year saw the loss of Alexia Christian, Meagan Hockaday, Mya Hall, Janisha Fonville, and Natasha McKenna at the hands of Police. #SayHerName

Police violence against Black Women extends beyond our deaths at the hands of the state - we are routinely raped and beaten by the police yet we are rarely the focus of discussions about police brutality.

In New York City for example, the rates of racial disparities in stop & frisks are identical for Black men and Black Women and even higher for Black Trans and GNC folks. The time to shine a light is now. #SayHerName

We have watched as Black transgender women like Kayla Moore are verbally harassed, misgendered, and killed by police. #SayHerName. The time to act is now.

We have watched as the families of Black women like India Karger, killed by Virginia Beach police, fight for justice with little widespread support. The time to #DefundPolice is now.

When Black Women are excluded from these conversations and narratives in our organizing spaces, it gives permission for media, researchers and advocates to do the same. #SayHerName

#SayHerName calls for a gender-inclusive movement against police violence. It calls for us all to widen the scope of our work and ensure that ALL police violence is brought to light. That ALL victims of police brutality are centered in this fight. That ALL families are supported
