    For us, it's a sad day in the office of as we say goodbye to . She's returning to LA and family after a terrific year in Malheur County. She built many sources and showed an appetite to learn and improve. I expect great things from her.

    "No one in that community will be covering, on a regular basis, school board meetings, city council meetings...." Hours sitting in meetings is not the best use of scarce resources to report on a community. Minority view, I know.

    The latest on the saga at - clearly an unsettling time to be an employee. Looks like one of Oregon's biggest contributors to good journalism over the years is headed for out-of-state ownership.

    According to court documents, the Bend Bulletin and other publications must terminate employees before the papers' sale to a Rhode Island-based company. (That company could re-hire any employees at its discretion.)

    A local government meets the spirit of Oregon's public records law. Refreshing to encounter this from while other local governments around Oregon still default to secrecy for reasons never fully explained.

    I also wanna say - as much as this information is not necessarily flattering to the district, gave me every record I asked for within 5 days of my requesting it with no fees & few if any redactions.

    So, going into the weekend I learn that the Bend Bulletin is selling for what seems an amazingly low price. A Canadian firm is using a U.S. subsidiary to acquire one of Oregon's iconic newspapers. I dreamed a bit of finding a way in.
