I remember when I was a games journo and a Mum found out at my friend’s dinner; she started berating me over why videogames were so violent, and all her kid does is stab people in Assassin’s Creed...she got even angrier when I asked why she bought her 13yo an 18 rated game...
oh boy! makes my blood boil! reminds me of when some parents took their kids to see deadpool 
age ratings are there for a reason!

On the other hand using them sensibly rather than just going by them religiously is needed. It’s all about finding a happy medium, I remember one of the best moments I had age 14 was when I got my first 16 rated game. My dad understood enough to give it to me when I was ready.

A good system to use is their allowed ages rated above what they should be allowed maybe leve it a bit between the 12 and 16 rating but overall it is a good system to go by.
