also you roughly want your salary to be at least 2x your monthly rent! mortgage is ideal, but i'd say rent first to see what areas you like (+ mortgages are ridiculous, go for it when you have a stable, high paying job! the housing market is also awful atm)

i've never heard of bedroom tax but there are different types of council tax bands depending on what the property is worth; living in a cheaper/smaller property means cheaper heating & council tax! (and also the actual council it's situated in!)

and lastly wilko is a godsend for housing stuff; they do cheap cleaning products, lighting, storage, some furniture etc., great for a beginner! hope i can help & ask away if you have any Qs as i've probably missed loads of info!
