One final thing to add is that Bernie didn’t even need to *win* SC; if he had even kept the margins respectable Biden still would have looked dubious and AK and PB may well have stayed in. Just giving the state away was a critical blunder.
I don't think the 30% strategy was sound, and yet Biden has SUCH obvious liabilities as a candidate, making party elites justifiably skeptical, that it actually could have worked had Bernie kept SC within single digits. But...
As a cranky bastard who values his solitude and doesn’t like small talk, these postmortems in some respects make me like Bernie more. But if he wasn’t serious about doing what you need to do to assemble a majority coalition he shouldn’t have run.
the real outliers were the polls showing Bernie competitive in SC. Also, he won black voters under 30 in 2016 and lost black voters over 30. He already tried this once and it failed. He learned nothing.
