“It is not my practice to show such photos” says Coroner at the request of bereaved father to show his son’s photograph to the jury. What can possibly be wrong about putting face to the name? When will we see a guidance on this from the Chief Coroner?

Yup, that was my understanding (largely ripped from the helpful Law Commission report on non-retroactivity prepared in relation to the Sentencing Code).

What do you reckon, legal Twitter? Any merit in a challenge on the grounds of Art 7 non-retroactivity? My instinct (which is worth very little indeed) is that the government would likely win any such challenge, following Hogben v UK. Expert views welcome.

Delightfully unusual floor plan in UN Third Committee today, with civil society seats labeled and, most importantly, intermingled with member state seats ➡️ A small change but hugely significant opportunity to build bridges between diplomats and activists 🤝 🗣 🪑

The most profound lesson drawn from the South African context is that the Palestinians must grapple with racial capitalism and that if solutions do not allow for a complete redistribution of land, wealth and power there will be no Palestinian liberation

In which the intelligence agencies appear to backpedal on declassification of the fact that Camp Echo II at Guantanamo was a CIA black site. And, possibly, that fact that Gitmo had at least two black sites in 2003 and 2004. (Echo II is now where 9/11 defendants meet lawyers.)
