After 3 x 45 mins (90% input only) sessions in Macedonian, I can recognise 25 words. I was surprised it was that many. I can speak to greet someone and say goodbye, & say thank you. An interesting approach & helps me understand Steve Kaufman’s focus on input first!

This week begins a 6 week intensive linguistics and language learning course where we are being introduced to a listening-before-speaking, TPR language learning method - and my randomly assigned language is Macedonian. Yay! after the 6 weeks I’ll be after more!

I have found all the points Olly makes to be true for me. Especially pronunciation and intonation - I hear and mimic. Also, I drill speech, like playing scales.

Wakes at 5:20am “Too early to get up.” Still awake at 6am “My tummy’s rumbling, get a coffee & go back to bed.” 7am “Guess I’ll give up and get up.” 8am “Exhausted - can’t study, I’m too tired - let me go back to bed”!!!

It's cheaper to provide a deaf child with an accessible language from birth than to fix a language deprived adolescent/adult.

If you struggle pronouncing a specific sound in a language, ask a native speaker if native children also struggle with that sound. Chances are they do, & they have little exercises they teach kids to practise. For a more formal approach, find a speech pathologist in the language.

If I could find a way to make a profession out of encouraging people, I *so* would. LOL... maybe I need to use one of those $5/min phone numbers like they use for sex chats, so people can ring me anonymously and I can be like "You're so amazing!" (Marketing might be a problem!)

I can’t believe it’s still a thing that we have to “prove” that ASL doesn’t hinder spoken language development. Do we also have to prove that ASL doesn’t cause chicken pox? Because that’s about the same level of ridiculousness.

Fun language memory - sitting with a group of Deaf people all communicating in Sign, when your mother walks out and says “Wow, quietest party ever!” And I’m thinking “How can it be quiet? The conversation is so loud!” because I “hear” the signs in my head!

I am so proud how my sister & brother-in-law Bron Morris & Gregg Morris have lived their lives. This effort was suggested by a neighbour - bcs Bron & Gregg create community in their street. They make family of their neighbours. .

Ears hear all, but brains trim info. Spanish can't hear "this" & "these". Australians: "ll" & "y". Japanese: "r" & "l". I wish I had the coding skills to develop my own "sound drill" software. Immediate feedback in sound drills has been shown to help.
