Lebanon’s political establishment, particularly the part of it that is still in power, is increasingly annoyed by Tripoli and going to lengths to paint in a bad light the city and its inhabitants.

The official website of the president’s party published an opinion piece that drew comparisons between Tripoli and Syria’s Homs and suggested that Islamist fighters from Idlib will move to the city in preparation for a fight.

While the politicians make speeches telling the Lebanese people that they agree w/ their demands, even claim that they always sought to implement the protesters demands but are victims of other politicians, the media outlets they control tell a whole different story.

The media controlled by politicians is behaving just like Assad-controlled media in Syria. Fabrications, mischaracterizations, rewriting of history, spreading of conspiracy theories, and even faking street interviews.

From these media outlets and their messaging, it is obvious that the politicians have no intention to deliver on any of their promises. And as long as this behavior continues, the protesters should not believe a single word coming from the political class.

When and how will Lebanon’s politicians understand that tactics used in the past to contain public anger will not work this time, I do not know.
I hope Lebanon’s revolutionaries have the energy and willpower they will need for the long haul.
