If we work with China, doesn't that imply treating the new junta with kid gloves? If democratic states impose sanctions, they drive the generals into China's arms. If they don't and work with China, Beijing's influence still grows but is also legitimised by the outside world.
The coup in Myanmar threatens to extinguish its people's hopes for democratic and human rights, and undermines attempts to resolve the Rohingya refugee crisis.
China is a key player. Today I pressed the Govt to open a dialogue to better coordinate an international response.
