#RapidOnsetGenderDysphoria is a new type of gender dysphoria which suddenly appears out of the blue in adolescence. These adolescents, especially females, are influenced by trans-IDing peers--in real life and/or in online communities--and become convinced they're trans too. 1

There's more than one type of gender dysphoria. Drs. Bailey and Blanchard describe them here: https://4thwavenow.com/2017/12/07/gender-dysphoria-is-not-one-thing/ … 2

Many parents of #ROGD kids have gathered at https://4thwavenow.com/  We are hesitant to OK cross-sex hormones and surgeries. We're skeptical that a condition caught via social contagion should be treated with medical interventions. 3

We prefer to provide alternative support for our kids. For example, I bought my #ROGD daughter clothes from the men's department. Got her hair cut. Reminded her that girls can wear these clothes and have short hair. 4

Found her a therapist who helped her sort through past trauma. Encouraged her to participate in extracurricular activities (which she loved). Tried to keep our relationship as strong as possible. 5

I didn't affirm her new gender identity. But I did acknowledge her distress and told her I loved her unconditionally. During this time period she was emotionally fragile. I was as gentle as possible with her. 6

At times my daughter was extremely frustrated with me. She wanted me to OK transition. But I held my ground. I felt strongly that this was in her best interest. 7

Beyond a therapist she briefly saw (& maybe some friends), she wasn't affirmed in her new identity by family members, teachers, or anyone else. 8

She was given time & space to figure herself out. Also, therapy helped immensely. After a year, she decided she wasn't trans after all. 9

And my daughter has remained convinced that she is female for over two years. She's more comfortable with her body. Happier. And much less emotionally fragile. 10

There are trans activists who've accused me of being a hateful transphobic bigot for taking the approach I did. They've called me "unsupportive" and predicted my "son" will commit suicide. 11

But I--and likely most people (besides trans activists)--consider it wise to proceed with caution if children suddenly, unexpectedly want drastic, experimental medical interventions promoted by their peers. 12

It makes sense to try the least invasive options first (therapy, supporting the rejection of sex role stereotypes, exercise/yoga, etc.) and save hormones/surgeries as a last resort. 13

This is how many @4th_WaveNow parents support their #ROGD kids. And quite a few of our kids have--with love and patience and time--outgrown their transgender identities. 14
