    The region is officially in drought, and avocado trees with a little bit of phytophthora are faring worst. Even if it totally defoliates I'm confident this tree would recover - with rain. Glad I'm not a small-time commercial grower. (Big growers have irrigation).

    The question is when to pick avocado Hashimoto? The skin has gone dull and I imagine I can feel a little 'give' when I squeeze the fruit. The trees are feeling the drought and starting to drop leaves. About 15 months from fruit set, so probably mature.

    Better to spray weeds when they're small. This plant has approximately 35 seeds for each seed head. The wind is picking up and soon all the seeds will be flying in the air. Or would have been if I hadn't stamped on them so that I can spray the millions of seedlings next year.

    The problem with rain watered avocado trees is long dry spells in summer. Watering the trees from the garden hose using limited pond water is tedious - and still ultimately contingent on rain. Soon. Please. Time to rethink soil and water preservation concepts.

    Apparently this is Orthodox church Xmas/New Year. Classy gift. Good to see most parts of Syria start to return to normality in spite of the terrorist onslaught. It will take many decades and much reparation money from the foreign guilty to rebuild.

    President Putin visited the Umayyad Mosque (Great Mosque of ) and the shrine of St. John the Baptist located in it. In memory of a visit to the Umayyad Mosque, Putin presented the Quran of the 17th century as a gift.
