This seems like dangerous messaging in light of Americans already having concerns about getting vaccinated. Many will think, “What’s the point?” But if the UK variant becomes dominant, it still seems extremely important that people get jabbed.

It is no longer clear to me what my individual response and responsibility is to this news. I am now completely vaxed. Should I continue my hermit life and assume the worst or should I encourage others to get vaxed? Did I make a big mistake?

Your vaccination is still highly effective for all but the African variant. And even then it's still effective. A booster at some point in the future will likely be needed though. The good thing is refactoring the vaccine for variants is easy and can be done quickly.
