I'm assuming 12 Billion tons is metrics tons, yes? In that case, for the sake of the metric phobic US, that would equal approximately 3,170,040,000,000 – 3.17 TRILLION – gallons of water. In a single day. Water that had been tied up in ice. Just think about that for a moment.
