  2. ICYMI over the holidays: on why, of all the issues facing city hall in 2019, Premier Doug Ford's subway "upload" could be Toronto's most contentious (and as it stands, confusing, since no one seems to really know what it means)

Anyways, if you want an up-close-and-personal look at backyard hens, you can also tune in to the 6pm newscast tonight for the TV version of my story. Don't be a chicken!

    4) The "cluck cluck" sound we all think of when we think of chickens is only part of the story. More often than not, the ones I heard warbled and mumbled and chirped and made all sorts of weird, quiet noises only vaguely sounding like the classic chicken sounds.

    3) On the topic of egg-laying: Hens are basically doulas. Or midwives. I can never remember the difference. But the point is, they huddle around the one who's laying an egg, cheering her on in chicken-speak. It's downright heartwarming.

    2) Hens typically lay one egg every day. Did you know this?! Because I, as someone who grew up in the city, did not. I assumed it was like, a few times a week at most. These feathered gals have to push one out every morning (cue me feeling squeamish on their behalf)

    1) Chickens, much like dogs or cats, have distinct personalities. The owners I spoke to said so, but I saw it myself hanging around three hens. One was a total sassy alpha girl, who literally kept *checking herself out in a mirror.* The others were more low-key. Fascinating.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying my story on the city's backyard hen pilot and how all that's going, but I also wanted to stop and share a few things I learned about chickens. Because let me tell you: I learned a lot!

A update from New York. The total number of people killed in traffic crashes fell to 200 last year, down from 222 in 2017 and the lowest level since tracking began in 1910. Pedestrian deaths, however, actually increased from the year before:
