In less than 24 hours my office has received over 1,000 emails demanding that San Francisco defund the police department
-

Has anyone suggested that would happen? No, didn't think so. We need something BETTER than the police (social services, community investment, and yes, a specialized group that can still use force, but not abuse their power).
-
Please offer yourself and your family to live in that area not serviced by regular police but by the better option that you propose. Let’s start that experiment at local level and see where it goes. But don’t force my family to live in that area.

Giving billions to city police forces has done wonders to stop crime too

-
Take a look at San Francisco where the DA refuses to prosecute most crimes (especially drug crimes) and let me know how not prosecuting works. Check out

Police cause more crime than they stop. Police, in fact, stop very little crime at all anyway. They tend to show up after the crime has already happened.

Ask a cop. They will gladly tell you how much extra BS they deal with that they aren't trained to handle. Lets not forget there's a mental health epidemic in this country. What if 5% of police budget went to community based urgent care for mental/behavioral issues?
-
How about continuity of care programs? Mentally ill prisoners are medicated while incarcerated. Once released they get a week or so worth of meds. This fuels recidivism and wastes police hours. Divert some police budget to deal with this.
