I’m broadly supportive BUT voting rules like ranked choice voting (or Condorcet) can address strategic issues but not cognitive limitations associated with evaluating many candidates. That’s why a sequential structure that winnows the field might make sense.

Maybe the Strauss readings from my political theory class are getting to me, but I wonder if twitter + the current social/ political climate will lead to esoteric writing practices (if they haven't already).

5/ Watching these talks was not only humbling as an aspiring formal theorist hoping to write elegant papers but also energizing. When I talk about formal theory with my empirically minded friends, I'll be sure to reference these two papers.

4/ While not exactly a formal theory paper, Patrick Kline and Christopher Walters used foundational properties of statistics to demonstrate methods for improving correspondence experiments.

3/ Drew Fudenberg presented the possibility of a learning effect within RDD and DiD treatment effects using a tractable formal model. With both frameworks becoming more common w/in econ and polisci, it's important to understand the effects we're observing.

4/ I was fortunate to see many amazing theory talks at AEA this year, but two talks that stood out centered on using theory to better understand commonly used empirical frameworks.

3/ But with increasingly available data, other grad students I have spoken to have found this less convincing.

2/ In the past year, I've been asked why I'm so excited about formal models. I try to explain that they can help explain phenomena not easily tested with data and provide a broader understanding of human behavior (in addition to being fun!)

I'm late to this whole conversation, but... I've found that it's difficult to make the case that non-economists and political scientists should care about formal theory when it's often hard to convince fellow students.

Great summary of Marianne Bertrand’s amazing lecture! I’d only add that it (1) really challenged the rationalization of gender inequities as due to differences in preference and (2) emphasized the importance of using methods common to fields other than econ

Interesting to consider in the context of apology research in the private sector
