In hetero relationships (in the US with our Christian values, anyway), why do men and women both have wedding bands, but only the woman gets an engagement ring? Someone figure this out for me

I don’t have the answer right in front of me, but I’m pretty sure it has to do with selling more diamonds. The whole “Three months pay” is entirely a fabrication from marketing to drive up the cost of a ring

If that’s the case, then wouldn’t there be a campaign to get an engagement ring for the man, as well?

Well because that line of thinking is old, out of date and tied to gender roles, I’m sure their thinking was tied to a belief that “women couldn’t afford it” again, I’m not entirely sure

I read that part of it was an indicator of a financial transaction, and that women could sue for damages if a man broke off an engagement. But I also don't trust everything I read on the internet so... (Though the suing part is true)

Also the DIAMOND engagement ring only rose to popularity in the 20th century, but engagement rings have existed before that.

I heard that too and I also heard that companies selling diamond rings essentially took advantage of that tradition to say a guy wasn't manly if he couldn't afford a diamond ring for his future wife which was why it became so popular. I'm not sure if it's correct though.
