In hetero relationships (in the US with our Christian values, anyway), why do men and women both have wedding bands, but only the woman gets an engagement ring? Someone figure this out for me

Also the DIAMOND engagement ring only rose to popularity in the 20th century, but engagement rings have existed before that.

I heard that too and I also heard that companies selling diamond rings essentially took advantage of that tradition to say a guy wasn't manly if he couldn't afford a diamond ring for his future wife which was why it became so popular. I'm not sure if it's correct though.

I'm not sure on the purpose, but the diamond part of it was part of the most successful bullshit ad campaign of the 1800s. Diamonds were worth almost nothing until then.
