It's hard to express in a tweet, but a teacher of mine once said "If you think it, we will hear it." There's a difference between a Highschool friend hearing your work and reaching out to catch up, and getting a message 20 min after an announcement or audition email has gone out.
It's the same advice I give to anyone going to a "Networking event." Don't go to Network. Go to meet some new people, maybe make a new friend or two. If you go there to try and make superfluous "contacts" and get work, you will likely fail.

This is fantastic advice on social skills in general. I have to constantly remind myself that it's also normal to be misunderstood if my intentions are falsely read. The more famous and successful people get, the more critical it is for them to be careful.

If your intentions are pure, be content with that even if misunderstood. Consistency in character is hard not to notice in the long run and your good reputation will eventually precede you.
