Yeah man, no matter how slick you think you might be, everyone *always* sees through this. I much prefer the people that are like "I saw you were working on this and I'd love if you could listen to my demos thanks." Over OMGHIIIIIIFRIEEEEND *any day.*
Even when this tactic works, and you get the audition and you book the part, it really doesn't generate any good will between you and the person you're trying to ingratiate yourself with.

So, say a former peer ends up in the industry as well. What's the appropriate move? Do you say nothing? Do you reach out and try to connect and share experiences? I understand not wanting to dress it up as something it's not but is it better to just keep to yourself or reach out?

It's hard to express in a tweet, but a teacher of mine once said "If you think it, we will hear it." There's a difference between a Highschool friend hearing your work and reaching out to catch up, and getting a message 20 min after an announcement or audition email has gone out.
