Check at our new preprint! We looked at reliability in 36 versions of the emotional dot probe task in 9000+ people, including those with high anxiety. We found lots of noise and not much signal, even among anxious participants. Congrats on the excellent work!

10/ Our goal was to create a version of the Reading the Mind in the Eyes with diverse faces. The final validation data look great! Between-test and within-test correlations were essentially the same, indicating strong convergence and similar reliability to the original test.

9/ From there, we collected data through TestMyBrain.org on these new items that allowed us to evaluate the psychometric characteristics of each item and select items for inclusion in our final test.

8/ We then created hundreds of items using still images taken from many, many videos, combined with emotion words that were much simpler than the original test (5th grade reading level or lower). Item creation and selection was led by Jasmine Kaduthodil.

6/ I'm sure the original test creators had very good intentions. They likely never expected the Reading the Mind in the Eyes test to be used as widely as it has, even 20 years later. For their original purposes (testing in Cambridge, UK in the 90s), it was reasonable.

4/ The faces in this test are all the faces of White folks. We've had participants of color tell us that taking this test as a measure of social cognition is offensive - it overtly centers the emotional experiences and expression of White people as the standard

3/ Among these issues are the reliance of the original test on complex vocabulary and the large number of female faces (and no male faces) that are "flirtatious", "excited", "interested", "fantasizing". But the biggest issue is the lack of racial/ethnic diversity of the faces.

2/ The original Reading the Mind in the Eyes test is a widely used measure of social cognition - one of the most widely used in psychology/psychiatry. Yet, there are aspects of the test that are highly problematic given its broad use.

Really appreciate this thread from . This in particular was EXACTLY how I felt (+ was perceived - most know me as “the TestMyBrain.org person”). It was convo w/Brian at that critical stage that helped me see another “mold” for an academic that fit what I was.

Backchannel feedback to my advisor from places I applied confirmed that I wasn't quite fitting the mold. I was a "techie" My prominent contribution was "just a website"
That made me mad not sad. I felt good about how I was doing my work and had my own vision for its importance.
