I've only read the first few chapters so far but Evolution and the Levels of Selection by Okasha is quite good. h/t @NeuroStats https://www.amazon.com/Evolution-Levels-Selection-Samir-Okasha-ebook/dp/B000RRKRTA …

Yes, Okasha is great on phil.sci issues. I would also recommend checking out
@mpigliucci's work, This is probably a good overview on issues of selection, in general.https://www.amazon.com/Making-Sense-Evolution-Foundations-Evolutionary/dp/0226668371/ …

I would also like a crisp way to think about this! The best I have is some intuition gleaned from this old post by Eliezer (https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/QcnkFgojszmo9k4xk/natural-selection-s-speed-limit-and-complexity-bound …), suggesting that different selection pressures might be measurable in units of bits/generation or bits/year or something like thatpic.twitter.com/6Th31RbPBC

An example is "transmission-ratio distortion" (e.g meiotic drive) -- an allele's frequency increases to its own benefit but at the expense of the organism. So selection is working *for* the gene but *against* the organism, hence diff 'levels of selection'.

By ‘levels of selection’ do you mean the controversy over “individual selection” vs “gene selection”, “group selection”, “kin selection”, “species selection”, &c.?
-
Let pᵢ be the # of copies of gene i. Gene selection: pᵢ' = net rate of new organisms with gene i Individual selection: pᵢ' ~ tendency for organisms with gene i to reproduce – tendency for them to die Species selection: pᵢ' ~ net total population growth of species with gene i

many good treatments in the lit, e.g.: Marshall 2011 (https://sci-hub.tw/https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0169534711001169 …) Section 2 of Okasha 2015 (https://academic.oup.com/bjps/article/67/2/435/2473003 …)

I wrote an essay on the evolution of multicellular cooperation via group selection. It probably isn't as mathematical as you want but the references at the bottom will provide a good starting point for digging into the philosophy of science lit.https://adamlgreen.com/cheaters/

There are cellular maintenance genes that are so important that screwing with them is fatal. There are other genes that only modify social behavior and vary widely. The selection forces at molecular vs social are different levels
