After the 2016 election, NBC News felt they needed to add some different on-air voices because they "got it wrong" and realized major portions of the American electorate were not represented on their news/politics shows.
They were right. They added some voices but none of them were nearly as courageous and impactful as that of my brilliant friend and colleague @hughhewitt.
But, perhaps the real change they needed to make was not on-air, but in the editorial realm. The decision-makers.
Is there *anyone* on the production team at an important program like Meet the Press who feels emboldened to speak up and say "wait a minute, I saw that interview and AG Barr said much more than this clip suggests." ?
Is there *anyone* on the NBC News team who recognizes they've been on the wrong side of so many Russia/Collusion Hoax stories and they need to start doing some real reporting on what they've ignored?
It's not just about having a token GOP guy who can get beat up by all the Trump haters on a panel and take it like a man. That's not balanced journalism.
If there is anyone in a decision-making capacity at any NBC News or MSNBC program who supports President Trump, do you think they feel comfortable and empowered to express that position at an editorial meeting?
If not, don't you think that might be a problem in presenting fair, objective news programming? This Meet the Press debacle is embarrassing and could cause lasting damage to once was once a Cadillac brand in the broadcast news community.
It could also be an opportunity to signal that NBC News recognizes they have a problem here and their bias (conscious or not) is severely debilitating their ability to present news and information to the American people.
Will they fix this problem or will they double-down? We shall see. But, in the meantime, as an intellectual exercise, the powers that be at NBC News and MSNBC should try to go around their offices and identify which of their colleagues are open Trump supporters.
