That's totally possible, the variant may have actually been the first release (based off the prototype), with the front facing one coming out later.

The looking right one is definitely more rare, but it pops up on eBay occasionally (That's where I got mine), there is one on there now for $40. Looking at this old scan from Tomart's Digest (December 1999) show's a photo of the sideways looking one, suggesting it was first.pic.twitter.com/DdvhVLP4WI
