Yup, parody is hard. To respond to the original and also talk about parody: It's perfectly okay to make a "not substantially similar" work that is inspired by the original. 1/
The frustrating part is you can qualify under fair use, meet 4 principles, and still deal with content owners disputing you, shooting down your defence to stifle you, and see them face no repercussions.
